Preface
I find myself reformatting my computer once more and as usual aside from drivers, I need softwares to make my computer more functional. Thus after downloading bunch of softwares, I decide to write a post and share a list of softwares that are free and suitable for a newly reformatted computer.

1. Antivirus
This is the first and foremost software you need to get installed before other softwares, antivirus will provide protection and prevent from infection of malwares. I know there's various free antivirus solution, among the standout of the best of the best are AVG, Avira and Avast!
As a recommendation, go with Avast! It has Real-Time shield, meaning it can detect virus in real-time and also removes it, aside from that it is Web-Shield, it protects you while you surf the internet and check connections made from your computer and block which Avira and AVG doesn't have in free version. Lastly it can perform a full scan for suspected infection, there's a boot scan as well. The latest version Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0.1091 was out today (20th April 2011) Download it here: Link

2. 7-zip

Next you need a compression tool, as you might downloaded drivers and softwares in zip file which you have to extract it out. Although windows provided a built in zip tool it's too simple, meanwhile 7-zip not only can open zip file but a range of various format. Download it here: Link

3. VLC
VLC Player is one of the most AIO player out there as it can play various formats without the use of codecs, with it's simplicity design it makes users navigate and customize the player base on their needs. Though a good alternative is K-Lite Codec pack which uses Media Player Classic is also recommended, and there are various standalone players out there, go and check it out. Download it here: Link

4. Sumatra PDF
This is a PDF reader, simple, easy to use and of course un-scripted, meaning it just show you the documents minus click-able links, and potentially dangerous script embedded in a PDF document. Though Foxit and Adobe Reader is also an alternative. Download it here: Link

So far I think that's all, there's indeed a lot of sofware, utilities and application that would even be better trying out rather than explaining it. These sites is an awesome site for softwares:
